Meat industry threatens the planet

Letter to the editor in today's SF Chronicle:

Wildfires in Hawaii and Canada. New England flooding. Heatwaves across the Midwest. Forest fires in California. All of these natural disasters have one thing in common: They are all exacerbated by animal agriculture.

Our planet is crying out for help as we continue to strip rainforests, the very lungs that allow the Earth to breathe, making way for more farmed animals.

The United Nations tweeted that “The meat industry is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the world’s largest oil companies. Meat production contributes to the depletion of water resources & leads to deforestation.”

The tweet was deleted under pressure from the meat industry.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

A nutritious, plant-based diet, proven optimal for all stages of human health, awaits. There are delicious plant-based options for every food you currently enjoy in every aisle of every grocery store and co-op.

Make the change now before it’s too late.
