Mary Beard

I've read Mary Beard's journalism and reviews for years in the Times Literary Supplement and the London Review of Books but never knew anything about her until I read the profile ("A Cambridge classicist takes on her sexist detractors") in the September 1 edition of The New Yorker that recounts the shocking abuse she has received over the internet---and how she was raped when she was a student.

Nor had I seen her BBC programs, "Meet the Romans with Mary Beard," which, I was happy to discover, are available on YouTube.
