Vision Zero progress report
Traffic death in San Francisco |
I link more than 50 serious traffic accidents below in the city as of yesterday. It's an incomplete list, since these are only the stories I noticed in the media since January. It's a significant under-count. The problem is that we can't rely on the city's Vision Zero count, as I've been pointing out for years.
Jim Herd suggests that City Hall deliberately under counts serious accidents, which wouldn't surprise me. At the very least, the city should dump the Vision Zero slogan/policy, since it not only insults our intelligence it makes its advocates sound dumb.
The city could make a major initiative to begin restoring its credibility by creating a Collision Investigation Squad to investigate every injury accident in the city and then publish the results every year to inform the public where and why they happened and what, if anything, the city can do to prevent them from happening again.
Note too that there's only one serious scooter accident on the list, though there were surely many more, like those mentioned by the doctor in this Chronicle story.
This list includes six cyclists and eleven pedestrians killed on the streets of the city so far this year. That too is an undercount, since some of those who suffered "life-threatening injuries" surely died after the original story was published.
