Pay the city to park in front of your own house?

A letter to the editor in today's SF Chronicle:

Expensive to park
Regarding “Switch to parking benefit districts can better S.F., one space at a time” (Open Forum, Aug. 13): I don’t think the article you ran suggesting that folks in the city pay to park their car in front of their house is going to win much love locally. People where I live are generally working parents with garages full of kids’ toys, tools, stored books, clothes, etc.

They don’t have thousands of extra dollars in a tomato can in the backyard for frivolous ideas dreamed up by academics from UCLA. They certainly can’t afford a regressive tax of $250 or $500 per month to send downtown for City Hall politicians to spend — as wisely as ever, no doubt — in exchange for granting them the privilege of parking their car at home.
