Bridge failures in the US

Kevin Drum on bridge failures:

There's no trend either up or down. It's perhaps also worth noting that virtually none of these failures were due to age or bad design. The vast majority failed due to floods, being hit by trucks, being hit by barges, or by construction work.

Rob's comment:
In other words, it's all bullshit. Bridges rarely fail.

A chart from Wikipedia with bullshit numbers doesn’t help either. Bridges may rarely fall but without proper maintenance they fail. Instead of using bridge tolls and fake soda taxes for redesign of streets and parking removal some of that money should go back to regular maintenance. Seriously when was the last time anyone has seen bridge workers in the Bay Area actually painting, climbing up the side cables or close off a lane like they used to fix anything? 10 years plus maybe? I’m sure the SF gov was jealous of the bridge collapse in Baltimore wishing it happened to one of our own bridges so that they can rebuild it bikes and buses only.
