The decline of bike commuting in SF

London Breed

From Bicycling
:

San Francisco has been much-discussed in the supposed decline of biking to work in the U.S. Though bike commuting rates in that city fell by 19.9 percent between 2016 and 2017, they’re still up nearly 40 percent since 2006...

Rob's comment:
Look at the city's Transportation Fact Sheet (page 3) for a more accurate historical context for the alleged growth in commuting by bike in San Francisco: 2% of all commuters rode a bike to work in 2000, and 4% did that in 2014. Bike supporters would trumpet that as a 100% gain without noting that it took 14 years to achieve.

According to the SFMTA's Travel Decisions Survey 2017 (page 5), commuting by bike in the city is back down to 2%.

After more than 15 years of anti-car and pro-bike propaganda from City Hall and the Bicycle Coalition, the city is back where it started. Clearly the people of San Francisco have rejected that message.
