Excluding northern neighborhoods (such as Russian Hill, Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, Marina, Presidio Heights and North Beach/Telegraph Hill) I actually think the San Francisco is on its way to becoming uglier than Los Angeles. Really!
Every time I go to L.A. I am surprised by the changes for the better (new subways, new street landscaping, new walkable retail districts, etc, all without the smell of urine we put up with on most streets here in "the city". I would much rather take a walk down Wilshire Blvd than Market Street, While we worry about how to make bike riders feel more comfortable, L.A. is building new subways and a regional traffic signal control system to help keep the their city moving.
This ugly building would never be allowed in Santa Monica, Pasadena, Westwood, etc so why is it allowed here?

That's your (one) opinion.

Cringe architecture.
More examples okayed by the Planning Department's design group.
