Some drivers are more equal than others

Hank Plante on Channel 5 did an excellent mini-expose on how the political elite in SF provide themselves with parking while everyone else who drives here is relentlessly squeezed on finding parking in the city. Supervisor Dufty defends the system by claiming that supervisors aren't paid enough to forego the free parking.

Thanks to Saggita100 on The Wall for the link.

The elitism of our supervisors isn't a new story.

Rob, can you and I agree that we should give the Supervisors a MUNI pass instead of free parking?

They're already making $100,000 a year. Let them pay for their own pass.

I have no problem with "giving" them a muni pass. Let them pay tax on 'the gift'.

They need to meet their constituents.

Another reason why bicycles are totally useless in SF.

Other drivers that are "more equal than others" appears to be unlicensed illegal aliens. Matier & Ross report that instead of impounding cars they'll be allowed to phone a friend. Police will then stand around 20 minutes doing nothing while waiting.

In a transit first city that discourages car driving it sure is curious that one group of car drivers is getting a huge break.

@missiondweller - you are misrepresenting M&R. This applies to all unlicensed drivers, regardless of if they were born in City Hall or immigrated to SF inside a mule carcass. While many of the unlicensed drivers are illegal aliens, many are multiple repeat DUI offenders.

I'm frankly more offended by the people who have had their license revoked. An illegal alien cannot get a license, that does not necessarily mean they are bad drivers. If you had your license revoked, it's a little more clear.

The change is driven by Campos, clearly for the sake of immigrants. M&R are following the illegal alien face of the story because nobody is jumping up and down to defend someone with 6 DUIs who is still driving a car.

My personal belief is that we should allow those in the country illegally to get drivers licenses, register cars, and get insurance, outside of the eye of immigration - this is orthogonal to my stance on immigration itself. Currently ICE is not handling the immigration situation completely, so there are illegals here, driving without testing or insurance.

Until the immigration problem is solved, we should mitigate the problem of unlicensed, uninsured drivers. If you get hit by an uninsured illegal immigrant, it will be of little comfort to you when they are deported and you get no compensation.

Not to mention the "break" the rest of us will get as the DMV collects fees, insurance companies collect premiums, etc...
