Mirkarimi: Better as sheriff than supervisor

Photo by Luke Thomas for Fog City Journal

I was Mirkarimi's harshest critic when he was a supervisor, but he seems to be turning into a good sheriff, as he advocates sensible changes at the county jail like this:

Under the proposed law, people who are awaiting trial could be released from custody without posting bail if they agreed to wear an ankle bracelet; the legislation would also allow more convicted offenders to serve out their time at home by giving the sheriff’s department more discretion to decide who is eligible.

Mirkarimi said the legislation is mostly aimed at the county’s pretrial population---currently, anywhere from 50 to 75 percent of the approximately 1,400 in county jail at any given time are awaiting trial. The sheriff’s department would look at each inmate and decide, on a case-by-case basis with public safety in mind, who would qualify, he said...

The Murk on veterans in jail.

I do not know the details and it would be nice to know what criteria the Sheriff would use to make a decision about who to release. Also who would be liable if someone released subsequently committed a serious crime (not a "quality of life" crime)where, for example, someone was injured?

As the article says, the sheriff would exercise "discretion...with public safety in mind." People charged with violent crimes wouldn't qualify.

Discretion - in other words "PC Murk" would release Muslims and blacks. Oh wait they are "African Americans" (I prefer the term "punks with guns")

This satisfies his political base. So of course he would release a punk like Chris Bucchere.
