Tinker to Evers to Chance
Steinfeldt, Tinker, Evers, Chance |
by Franklin Pierce Adams (a Giants fan)
These are the saddest of possible words:
“Tinker to Evers to Chance.”
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double –
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
“Tinker to Evers to Chance.”
Rob's comment:
Baseball fans have often heard lately from the TV talking heads that the Chicago Cubs haven't won a world series since 1908. I'm a SF Giants fan, more or less, but I don't read much about sports, except for scanning the sports page in the morning.
But I of course heard of that legendary double play combination, Tinkers to Evers to Chance, in the 1950s when as a kid I played and read about baseball. I didn't know that they were on that 1908 team.

Thanks to Mike Wallach.
