Civil War ended 150 years ago today

The Daily Beast posts part of one of the last chapters in the late Shelby Foote's great narrative history of the Civil War. The Grant/Lee meeting at Appomattox that ended the Civil War took place 150 years ago today. Foote was the best talking head in the Ken Burns Civil War documentary.

Money quote from Grant: 

I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought.
