Trump and Marley's ghost

Letter to the editor in today's NY Times:

Re “Harris’s Words From 4 Years Ago May Haunt Her” (front page, July 30):

I ask, Why should they? Public policy is bewilderingly, often dauntingly complex. As events unfold, thoughtful public officials evolve. As they speak with and listen to others, they often rethink their positions, change their minds, as do most of us in our lives.

Regardless, no politician or official can be a perfect fit for every voter. Those who want a candidate to be a clone of themselves are unrealistic and self-defeating.

I'm posting this letter because it's from a city resident, not because I think Miller is saying something that hasn't occurred to Harris---or anyone who runs for public office, for that matter. 

Yes, what she said in the past Republicans will try to use against her. It's called a political "record." Harris is ready to have the American people compare her political record with Donald Trump's. 

Marley's ghost had a lighter burden than the personal and political record that Trump will have to drag into this campaign.
