Covid-19, South vs. North: South loses again!

Daily Kos:

In my morning perusal of The New York Times list of Covid-19 statistics by state, I noticed that the top ten in daily per capita cases, averaged over the last seven days, made up most of the Confederacy.

In order they are: Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas. Of the ten, all were recognized by the Confederate government as part of the Confederacy, though Kentucky was never formally recognized by the Union as being in rebellion.

In Kentucky, a border slave-holding state, seditionists formed a shadow government and issued a secession act, which the Confederacy recognized. In any case, the top ten Covid states make up most of the eleven or thirteen (depending on how you count Kentucky and Missouri) states in the Confederacy.....

My only point is that the spread of Covid-19, most prominent where people are rebelling against masks and vaccines, reflects deep structures of feeling and belief that are rooted in history....

Trump of course won those states, except for Georgia where Biden won by only 12,000 votes.

Of course this infographic could also include states with the most blacks, what conclusion would be drawn from that? Correlation does not equal causation.

Well anonymous - you tried a little gotcha there but the reason the cases are surging in those states is ... Unvaccinated White Republicans.

If you break down those states by counties, the states with the most Trump voters (unvaccinated whites) are driving the surge

Yes, this is old news: among other drugs, Trump was given this treatment. At the time, it was expensive and not widely available.

Not clear to me that it is now widely available.

If vaccines work then why the masks? Why a 3rd and 4th booster shot with possibly a 5th? These are simple questions to ask.

"Simple questions" from a simpleton. Deep inside the right-wing bubble, apparently this type of ignorance is typical. The vaccines generally keep the vaccinated from getting seriously sick, being hospitalized, and dying, but they don't prevent them from getting infected and spreading the virus. That is, the vaccinated can get infected, have no symptoms ("asymptomatic") and still spread the virus without even knowing they're infected.

Hence, masks are often required when you're in public, in the grocery store, in large groups of people, on the bus, etc. to both prevent people from both being infected and spreading the virus.

This has been the scientific consensus based on the data for months.

I've heard of booster shots but not a 4th or 5th shot. That sounds like a right-wing goofball invention. I will qualify for a booster shot late this year and will get it as soon as possible.

Booster shots are based on the premise that the first shot/shots lose some potency to protect you over time, not to mention the threat of the virus morphing into an even more infectious strain, which is what the Delta variant represents: the virus is evolving so it can replicate easier, your basic Darwinian process.

The longer we take to get it under control---and religious crackpots and other morons refuse to be vaccinated---the greater that threat will be.

District 5 Diary now has a vaccination requirement for all commenters. Are you vaccinated?

“ Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.”
“ overall COVID-19 recovery rate 97%-99”

And here is Fauci

“ This has been the scientific consensus based on the data for months”

Coming from 3 people in the Biden administration. Zero scientific evidence exists that the masks help. What they say is that masks may help. The word is MAY in other words it’s possible as in anything is possible. Hard science data does not exist. It’s just a guess.

“ That sounds like a right-wing goofball invention”

I assume this is your scientific data? No wonder your lost.

"No wonder your[sic] lost."
What have I lost? Or do you mean I'm personally and politically "lost"?

The first quotation in your comment is actually true, which is surprising coming from you. Typically, however, you don't provide a link.

That the recovery rate from the virus is 97%-99% is not good news, since among those who haven't recovered and have died include more than 630,000 Americans.

The Fauci quote and link is also correct. That's the consensus on a treatment that can be helpful for people already infected that I hope is becoming more widely available. When Trump got that treatment, it wasn't widely available and/or was very expensive.

Typical that you don't name the people who criticize masks or provide a link. The medical consensus is that masks do prevent the spread of the virus. Am I supposed to now do a web search to confirm that often-confirmed reality?

We also have to consider the real problem of "long-term" Covid, the people who are infected, don't die, and continue to have serious symptoms.

I’ve left a few links and have always referred to the cdc website. Plenty of other medical and health sites out there including studies from Harvard, Clevland clinic and so on. Even the popular webmd which I personally don’t like.

As far as long term sure you’ll have people with mild symptoms to very serious symptoms. The good thing is no one is dying unless over a certain age or possibly having a more serious medical issue prior to catching Covid. Just like old people dying from pneumonia.

With or without the vaccine one would still have symptoms difference being serious or mild symptoms. Some have a very bad cold lasting for weeks and some have a mild cold lasting only a few days. Each body is different.
They have zero idea about long term. They’re still too busy keeping track. Go to the emergency room or hospital your asked if vaccinated or not and then it’s recorded. Vaccine centers even record your name. Which helps them keep count to see how well it’s working or not.

But of today and after plenty of research recovery rate is very high with a bellow 1% chance of dying keeping in mind majority of people that have died were over 65. This is the important part. I doubt they will ever be able to control “cases”. A cold can’t be controlled, fly can’t be controlled and so on. “Cases” means nothing. It’s how many people are dying who and why that is important.

Like a lot of conservatives, you're still determined to downplay the seriousness of the pandemic. Why is that? Because your guy Trump screwed it up so badly that it cost him the presidency?

Thanks for the link-free, moronic, pseudo-scientific rant. Like a lot of you right-wing assholes, you don't know what you don't know---because you already have the answers, right?

That more than 630,000 Americans have already died from the virus is somehow an insignificant fact?

I bet you're also a religious crackpot on top of your political bullshit.

"I’ve left a few links and have always referred to the cdc website. Plenty of other medical and health sites out there including studies from Harvard, Clevland[sic] clinic and so on."

So why don't you link any of those sites? When did you ever link the CDC site? The answer: you didn't and that sentence is a crock of shit.

In your previous comment, you did provide a link to the pointless and uncontroversial Fauci opinion. That attempt at research apparently left you so exhausted you were unable to provide any more.

I’m giving you facts. There is no right wing left wing about it. Your response to everything is either trump or right wing. That’s your answer to everything. Or is that because you have no answer? What a damn wuss.

I’m speaking to you about facts and about Covid. Now instead of taking the time to read the reports on the cdc website which is cdc.gov and it’s called searching. Everything is trump and right wing. What the fuck is wrong with you man? Seriously are you that stupid?

Take all the energy you put into your anti trump bullshit And apply it to doing some research. I’m not your elementary school teacher. So shut your mouth and go do some clicking.

Where are the links, aka "evidence"?
