What's really happening: Vandalism helps Trump
Letter to the editor in today's NY Times:
Every day, on an endless 24-hour loop, I see coverage of vandalism going on in American cities after peaceful protesters go home.
What I don’t see is law enforcement descending on these lawbreakers. Nor do I learn if they are ever arrested and, if so, who they are. And if not, why not?
If the media are able to film these criminal acts in real time, why don’t the police intervene and put an end to them?
We are left in the dark about what is really happening.

Before the 1st large demonstration Portland Mayor Wheeler asked Gov. Kate Brown to call in the National Guard to help with maintaining a curfew and she refused. I remember very well the evening of May 31st, a Sunday when the first march started. The city had been cooperating with stay in shelter rules and downtown Portland was quiet for two months. In Salem a hairdresser opened her shop and was fined by the state because she could not maintain the 6 foot social distancing rule per the public health emergency imposed by the State but the BLM demonstrations were allowed because of the 400 year history of systemic racism which was also a public health emergency on par with Covid. This was stated not only by the Mult. County Health authority but also the city commissioners. Now the city is a mess and the opportunity has been lost to bring in the Guard because in liberal Portland it will look like the city has agreed with or even worse been intimidated by Trump. Nothing like weaponizing the 1st Amendment.
Like your weaponizing bullshit. Racism has in reality been an ongoing public/political emergency in this country from the beginning, though I agree that the Portland demonstrations should have ended months ago.
