Why Sutchi Hui died

Using the Strava site, cyclist Chris Bucchere was doing what the young men in the video below were doing: racing competitively through city streets.

With Strava, however, you can do it by yourself, since you're essentially racing against a time, not necessarily against other cyclists on the street at the same time:

Kim Flint (above) was killed while trying for KOM (King of the Mountain) status on Strava. He ran into a car while going 49 miles per hour on his bike in Tilden Park. His parents have filed a wrongful death suit against Strava. Later: Flint's parents lost in court.

Was Kim Flint blind, or did he not see the speed limit sign?

Oh right, he didn't give a shit about speed limits no matter what he was using to get around.

"I drive up and down interstate 880 a lot. If you are ever in the fast lane and you see me behind you, please move out of the way. I'm tired of having to pass all you slow people on the right."

Well now bikes can have ALL of Market street to harm pedestrians as cars are to be banned the entire length.

http://sfist.com/2012/06/20/market_street_car_ban_could_stretch.php

This could create the longest urban stretch of homeless camps in North America. Never mind that banning cars from streets has been shown to reduce the safety and activity planners crave. Market could have been one of the world's great urban streets and instead it will be one large dangerous bike lane.

Gee, that's pretty negative, Anon. Maybe the city should get Bevan Dufty to give everyone on Market Street a puppy to cool things down. Or somehow combine the puppy thing with bikes and the homeless. Puppy's on bikes? Or homeless people on bikes carrying puppies in those little canvas trailers the bike people put their small children in.

Sutchi Hui died because he entered the crosswalk against a red hand.

Evidence?

Have you ever seen a pedestrian wait for the white? I haven't.

For those who believe in evolution instead of creation, the term for cyclists who die of their own stupidity is called natural selection. It really only helps the gene pool if they are potential breeders in the first place.

that's pretty much true of everyone Mark. Fortunately for our evolution, far more motorists die of their own stupidity than cyclists do, every year.

Evidence? Watch the video with Sutchi Hui's wife. Hui was headed to an eye-doctor appointment several blocks North of the accident on Divis.

How was Hui going to get to that appointment? The 24 bus. The bus was across the street.

Hui was an old man and did not move very fast, but he did not want to miss that bus, which runs every 15 minutes.

As soon as the traffic light for Castro turned yellow, he looked left with his poor eyesight, did not see any cars, and hurriedly started across the street to get the bus before the doors closed.

Unfortunately for Hui, his poor vision did not pick up that the intersection was not clear, that there was a bicycle crossing Market legally, having entered the intersection on yellow.

This is why Hui was able to get from the sidewalk to halfway across the intersection by the time Bucchere made it across Castro, despite Bucchere going *at least* the speed limit, entering on yellow, and the fact that the Walk signal does not turn on until 2 seconds after the cross traffic signal goes RED.

What video are you referring to? In any event, if Bucchere hadn't been doing his Strava speed trip, he could have stopped in time to avoid any obstacle in his path. Nice try, though, Bike Nazi.

Where is your evidence that Bucchere was trying to set a record?

I just know what I read in the papers. The court will presumably sort this out for us. If you have something that hasn't been presented in the media, please share it with us, and, while you're at it, District Attorney Gascon might also be interested.

At least you are willing (apparently) to concede that "What you read in the papers" isn't necessarily "evidence"

Gascon has shown through his statements to be very uninterested in evidence, and primarily interested in a conviction to serve his political career.

In other words, windbag, you don't have any more evidence than the rest of us. We'll see what Gascon has when he makes his case in court.

"We'll see what Gascon has when he makes his case in court."

If that's your position, why is it that your post has already made judgement - "Why Sutchi Hui died"

That's my opinion based on what we know from the media. If I'm shown to be wrong, I'll say so. Still waiting for your video evidence showing that Sutchi Hui was responsible for his own death.
