2008: 26 Homeless deaths
Only 26 homeless people died on our streets last year, the lowest number since 1986, when the body count was 54. (There were 86 deaths in 2006 and 44 in 2007.) Since the city no longer does an official count, I've been doing an unofficial count for the last several years, based on copies of the Public Health Department's Homeless Death Form, which was created in 2005. During the 1990s, there were on average more than 100 deaths every year among the homeless in SF. The steep decline is surely another sign of success of the homeless policies of the Newsom administration, which has moved thousands of homeless off city streets since Care Not Cash went into effect in 2004. My favorite homeless program is Homeward Bound, which gives folks a bus ticket back to where they came from. As of November 2, 2007, the city had bused 2,503 homeless people outtahere at an average cost of $149. Since January 2004, the city has helped 6,388 homeless single adults into permanent housing.

"My favorite homeless program is Homeward Bound, which gives folks a bus ticket back to where they came from."
what happens if SF gives you a bus ticket home, you see the folks, then come back to SF? Don't go being republican on me, I'm seriously curious - without commenting on the usefulness of the program - as to what happens if the cops find some drunkard on the street and determine we had bussed him out of the city 3 months prior?
Some people do return. Way back in 2005, Kevin Fagan did a story on Homeward Bound for the Chronicle. He was told that of the 814 homeless bused out of SF during the first 10 months of the program, 24 returned ("814 Homeless Given a Ticket Out," 11/25/05). Even so it's the most cost-effective homeless program the city has.
I saw we eliminate the entire homeless population in this country by providing them with homes (or allowing them to provide themselves with homes).
Of course we'd have to be willing to change the governemnt into an agent that can look after its people's needs (wait, what is the government for again?), and to be willing to treat the mental disorders of its citizens.
hello, my name is Amy Kissel Fink, i live in easton, pa... and i believe that one of the men you blogged about, that died in san francisco could quite possibly be my father, and i was wondering if you could help me find out! thank you very much
Ms. Fink: I get the Homeless Death Forms from the city's Dept. of Public Health, Office of Vital Records, which may be able to give you more information. Their phone number: (415) 554-2700.
Hello, I don't see too many cases that stem from hypothermia being the cause of death. Tonight, for intance is going to be near freezing. Did they expand the shelters in 2008? Is ther a 24 hour shelter they can take the muni to?
Steve Yarger...who's street name was "STONE"...was my best friend back in San Francisco when both of us were battling with addictions and the homelessness which had become a daily way of life. He sported the biggest blonde afro I've ever seen and always wore black shades...no matter day or night. One of the coolest people you could ever meet. Sad to hear of your death my friend. See you in heaven when I get there...God willing. Peace. :)
